Objective and Criteria Reasoning - V1.1

The primary goal of the APDI is to raise the credibility of motorsport biased driver training (not on the public highway). The wider credibility of our profession does not lie with the individuals we work with and for, but our legal and personal obligations at large.

The criteria of APDI entry is to demonstrate a professional level of experience for any job on which its members may be employed, whether private coaching or corporate.

The APDI is additional to and not separate or in competition with the existing licencing & training bodies (such as MSA, ARDS, BARS, ARKS, AHASS, LANTRA, BORDA). The purpose of these is to license employees for Experience and Corporate events at their specific venues or events. This can potentially lead to an erosion of standards which has a negative effect on our professional members.

APDI bridges this gap.

Using the following criteria for membership should create a position where APDI members are the more suitable staff for track days, manufacturer events, professional on track driver training and so on.

Through improved insurance and specialist legal support, plus a sensible criteria for membership, the APDI is the choice for anyone who makes a living from off the public highway performance driver training.

Provisional APDI Member Minimum Requirements

Purpose: To offer better legal and insurance support than current licencing / training bodies, increased credibility and connections to the industry via the APDI forum. Provisional members shouldn't benefit from the same level of legal and insurance cover for private driver coaching but will be recognised for track day, manufacturer and corporate work with APDI supporters.

Full APDI Member Minimum Requirements

Full legal and insurance support for all elements of performance driver training work. Suggested further benefits: APDI Name badge, Permission for use of APDI ‘Full member’ logo for CV / Website.

Notes:

Competition Criteria - On disciplines where applicable (such as Race or Rally) where risk levels are higher - a minimum of 2 years of car based competition MUST be achieved in order to accept entry as either Racing or Rally instructor. This is reasoned for ability to operate at a ‘higher level’ of dynamic understanding and awareness and control of potentially dangerous situations that competition brings to an individual’s skill set.

On disciplines where competition may not necessarily be required to operate safely and to a high level of competence (such as Skid Control) experience is judged to be the overwhelming factor for basing ability to perform the task to a high level of competence.

Consideration will also be given from feedback given by other APDI members as to an applicant’s suitability to become a member.

Membership consent will be considered with the following in mind:

General attitude

Professionalism towards customers

Work ethic

Use / abuse of equipment

Number of spins / crashes / "off's" for the instructors customers whilst instructing or for the instructor themselves during demo laps or competitive events

Competition background credibility / level

Number of days done 'in car' per year

Formula Ratio For Instructing To Competition Experience

In addition to the basic competition experience requirements (where applicable), the formula of 2 years of instructing being equivalent to 1 year of competition is used. A ‘year’ of competition is based on a ‘season’ of competition - a minimum of 6 events per year.

A ‘year’ of instructing is based on approximately 40 days per year (around 3 per month). All applicants must have the consent of at least 2 APDI Directors to be granted either Provisional or Full

Membership. APDI reserve the right to terminate the membership of any member should they provide false information on a CV, represent The Association incorrectly or bring The Association into disrepute.

Association Membership Rules

All applications have to be approved by at least 2 APDI Committee Members to be accepted. In the case of a Race or Rally membership application where the applicant has competed for at least 10 years or more with podium results, in at least 3 different series and is widely known to be “on the motorsport instructor scene” but perhaps has not required an ARDS license previously, a CV is required and an

MSA International C grade competition license must have been held. The senior membership of the APDI must vote by a majority to confirm membership APDI reserve the right to terminate the membership of any member should they provide false information on a CV, represent The Association incorrectly or bring The Association into disrepute.
